Following the national lockdown and closure of schools due to Covid-19 it was really important on our return in September that all children were supported in their return but also that they felt part of the wider school community.
We enjoyed 'After the Fall' by Dan Sandat about Humpty Dumpty being an egg that is famous for falling off a wall, however he overcame his fears by climbing 'one step at a time' until he was no longer afraid and was no longer known for his fall but the fact that he flew. We want all our children to feel nurtured to enable them to 'fly' too.
As part of our Reconnect Curriculum all children took part in a whole school dance which was filmed separately for each 'bubble' but then brought together to form a whole school film, giving children a sense of their contribution to the wider school community and a sense of belonging to something bigger than just their 'bubble' - please click on the vido link on this display to see the film.

Pupils studied the work of Picasso as part of the Art Curriculum and created a piece of work in the style of Picasso. Pupils chose whether to use a warm or cool colour pallet and designed their own portraits based on Cubism and Picasso's style.

The class used the book ' Window' by Jeannie Barker to inspire their work. Pupils created their own interpretation using what they could see from their bedroom window as inspiration. Different mediums were used to create the effect including natural materials collected from the school grounds to create a collage effect.

Every year we hold a Careers week where we invite guest speakers from a range of professions to come and speak to our pupils. In recent years we have had doctors, paramedics, criminologists, police, engineers and veterinarians amongst others. We use the week to inspire our pupils about the world of work.

Our KS1 Shared area provides a multi use learning space for children in Classes Robin, Dove and Peacock. The area provides space for continuous provision which offers children the chance to engage in active learning through hands-on, play-based activities. Continuous provision can enable children to explore recent learning, practice new skills, and follow their own interests, both indoors and out. The space also offers opportunities for small group learning and 1:1 reading.

Pupils in Key Stage 2 are allocated their own locker for their personal belongings. We encourage independence and a sense of personal responsibility for looking after their own belongings.

SPORTING EVENTS & COMPETITIONS
At Shelley First School we use our Sports Premium Funding to ensure sporting opportunities for pupils are wide and varied.  This includes sports coaches teaching alternative sports such as Orienteering, Fencing and Archery.  We actively encourage pupils to take part in our after school programme.  Beyond this we encourage links between local sporting clubs and our pupils so they can continue to be active beyond the school day.
PYRAMID COMPETITIONS
We are proud of our pupils' many sports achievements, both individually and as a team and we love competing in sporting events within our pyramid.  The children have the opportunity to represent their school in numerous events including, rugby, football, cricket, swimming, cross country, hockey, netball and sports hall athletics.  Pupils are given the opportunity to go on to represent their county if they are successful.
SPORTS PARTNERSHIP
Children regularly attend Shelley College Sports Partnership events during school time and as part of enrichment.  This enables them to develop their skills and confidence across a wide variety of sports working collaboratively with pupils from other schools.  Events include multiskills, sportshall athletics and gifted and talented events.

Why do School Grounds matter?
On average pupils spend up to 25% of their time at school outside.  We believe our school grounds are as important to the education and overall well-being of our pupils as our indoor provision. Our grounds are utilised in all areas of our curriculum as well as for play and enjoyment.
Supporting and enhancing the curriculum
School grounds are a vital resource for learning and offer unique opportunities to deliver and enhance all area of the curriculum, formal and informal, all year round.  They provide different opportunities and experiences, and support all styles of learning.  Many pupils who struggle inside classroom flourish outside of it, and outdoor learning can help to raise attainment.
The hidden messages
Children read messages and meanings from the quality of their surroundings.  The quality of the outside space has a huge impact on children’s attitudes and behaviour towards school and towards each other.
Engagement and participation
Giving children and young people a say in the way their grounds are used and improved enable them to learn to create and look after something that is relevant and valuable. We involve children fully in the process of change through pupils voice, this helps them to develop a wide range of life skills, and can improve confidence and self-esteem.

Attendance at Shelley First School We aim to promote a culture where excellent attendance and punctuality are seen as a fundamental requirement for all learners.
All pupils matter and being on time and in school is of upmost importance for cementing these key life skills at an early age.
· Our Whole School target for excellent attendance is 97% and this goal is the same across the Shelley Pyramid of schools. Every child helps to achieve this whole school target.
· We aim to see all our pupils in school on time, everyday.
· We celebrate attendance achievements!
We have adopted the Shelley Pyramid attendance policy Being in school everyday :
1. Helps pupils stay on track in their learning. It is never easy to ‘catch up’ when time is missed. Starting the day late can impact a child’s entire day and affects the whole classroom.
2. Reduces anxiety because your child will feel connected academically and socially when they are in school each day.
3. Builds confidence and good habits that will last a lifetime and transfer to life beyond school.
What can Parents/Carers do to support excellent attendance?
· Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
· Get clothes and bags ready the night before.
· Only let your child stay at home if they are truly ill. Keep in mind that complaints of headache or stomach ache can be signs of school anxiety.
· If your child seems anxious about going to school talk to their teacher or Senior Leader for advice.
· Avoid booking appointments and holidays during school hours. If this can’t be avoided then please present a copy of the appointment
· Have a back up plan in place for getting them to school should something come up.

Every year we take part in Anti-bullying week where we carry out focussed activities with pupils to encourage them to think about what bullying is and what effect it has on others. Each class creates a leaf for the 'Golden Tree' with their pledge about bullying.
What do we do to prevent bullying and create a listening school?
The Head Teacher/Governors ensures that an audit of current practices takes place bi-annually and that necessary changes to policy/strategies are implemented. Surveys/discussions/observations also inform the outcomes
1. Raise awareness of bullying (through the curriculum) and teach social skills in a conscious and systematic way.
2. Raise awareness by addressing bullying through assemblies (at least termly).
3. Raise awareness by PSHE & Citizenship being part of every child’s entitlement and being woven into the basic curriculum.
4. Reinforce the above via the annual Anti-Bullying Week (November)
5. Ensure that all staff (teaching, non-teaching, lunchtime supervisors, etc) are aware of our anti-bullying procedures.
6. All pupils to have an assigned person (our Key Stage Leaders) to whom they may talk in confidence. At Key Stage 2 this person is Mrs A Westerman and at Key Stage 1 the person is Miss H Barker, additionally Mrs R Moran is always available to talk to as Assistant Headteacher. Alternatively, the child is at liberty to speak to any member of staff that they would feel comfortable talking to.
7. The school has several well trained staff, who may be able to advise staff/pupils/parents according to need.
8. Staff are made aware of the school’s whistle-blowing policy should problems arise.
